Stupid Words
This isn’t my first – and not likely to be my last – entry complaining about churches and their horrible presentations. I’ve been involved in both sound and powerpoint at various churches, spanning a period of over seven years. Every pastor and worship leader, while using different methods, have the same rule: you must show the words to the songs they are singing. Here’s the thing... no one looks at them.

Schtock
There’s been a lot of blog press about a new site, schtock.com. Practically every design blog out there has made mention of this guy (girl?), and his site only launched September 5th.

Keep It Simple Stupid

Following the KISS principle to a T, Umbrella Today has introduced the “simplest weather report ever”. At first it’s silly. But then you realize it’s brilliant. “Oh, there’s going to be a high pressure zone over the city today? That is so good to know.” No! “Is it going to rain?” That’s all you really want to know.

Special Vision
![]() | Maybe I’m just cranky today, but is there some reason that only I can see the problem in this photo? I strongly believe in a design being “pixel perfect”... where every item in the design is precise down to the last pixel. I don’t know how this gets past one’s personal quality assurance filter. This not only went past the designer’s QA, the site went live like this. Ridiculous. |

I love the hidden concept in this logo. Not unlike the FedEx “arrow”.

How to: Slideshows
As I sat through yet another overly lengthy slideshow yesterday morning, it hit me... people do not know how to make good slideshows. Powerful software in the hands of virtually everyone is an awesome thing. So instead of just whining about it, I’m offering a few pointers in how to make your slideshows better.

Deteriorating Home
A friend of mine and I were discussing how intriguing it is when a house sits vacant, how quickly it deteriorates. Even if vandals don’t take over – breaking windows and doors – random parts and pieces of the house begin to crumble. It makes sense when you think about it. A leaky pipe never gets fixed, something that would be noticed by the homeowner. The wind might blow up some roofing shingles, which also goes unnoticed and never gets patched. Cracks in the walls, tree roots digging into the drains, and so on. What I’ve noticed is that web sites are much the same way. Similar to a house, if a web site doesn’t have someone to take ownership, it doesn’t take long to degenerate. The trick for a business is to recognize the need for an “owner”.

Tables vs. CSS
I’ve read numerous comments in which self-righteous web designers mock an old-school “table layout”. I started coding when people were using Windows 3.1 with only 16 colors. I confess I don’t get the hullabaloo of the CSS-only concept. Before embarking on my latest web project, I decided to do some research to find out what makes the CSS model so much better. There are four main arguments against using tables...

Automoblox

Quite possible the coolest toy since American Bricks. Each Automoblox vehicle comes with four body parts that can be interchanged with other vehicles. They currently offer 10 models (and four limited editions), which are around seven inches in length. They also offer three “minis”, which are a scaled down version (roughly four inches) of the larger models. The minis are much more affordable at only 8 bucks a piece. Hard to wrong with as a gift for any kid (3+).

The Shopping Cart
The first shopping cart was introduced in 1937, by the owner of the Piggly-Wiggly supermarket chain in Oklahoma City. Supposedly, people didn’t like them at first. Men found them to be effeminate (which is the polite way of saying it made them look gay). However, over 70 years later, no one has managed to come up with anything better. Virtually every invention is later topped by someone who has a better method. But apparently the shopping cart was so well designed, that there is no way to do it better.

Web Designs for Large Monitors
Why has the idea of designing for the lowest common denominator falling to the way side? The argument can be made that larger flatscreens have become so inexpensive, 17“ monitors are considered small. People with 800x600 resolutions are going to be pretty scarce. But assuming everyone has a large display, and uses the display the same way the designer does, means the designer is not paying attention to his/her audience.

30 Second Design
Through years of scientific training and data we have concluded that “the world’s best design ever” will be created in 30 seconds. It will be a design so intense that a young designer’s mind will instantly blow up when he/she sees it. – Scott Thares, Wink

Good Taste: Essential for Great Design
We can’t only blame the clients for unsuccessful design. Remember, design is a team effort, so if the designer cannot communicate with the client or is only interested in satisfying his tastes the project is likely to be unsuccessful. – Josh Pyles, Pixelmatrix Design
